In the Middle Ages, the town of Wasselonne was defended by a castle built on the hill overlooking the town. All that remains of this castle today is the entrance gate surmounted by a square tower, the former residence of the bailiff, some sections of the surrounding walls and a round tower.
The round tower, partially dismantled, was distinguished by its large diameter (12 m) and its imposing height (20 m). It contained several casemates. The battery room was equipped with 3 cannons which could be fired in three different directions
