The washhouse was first and foremost a place for socializing, ?the women?s café? as the saying goes. Discussions were lively, but competition was also the order of the day at the twice-yearly bujades (washings): ?who could boast of having the whitest laundry? The practice of bugeade obeyed very strict rituals, such as washing clothes at certain exclusive times of the year, or not hanging up the shirt collar for fear that a loved one would soon die.
