This bronze statue dates from 1899.
The monument consists of a bronze bust of Duchenne on a stone base, in front of which sits a female figure , a "matelote boulonnaise", who engraves the inscription on the base. The female figure is said to represent the Reconnaissance of the city of Boulogne.
The sculptor Charles Desvergnes offered his services free of charge to make the bust. 1899: inauguration of the plaster model on 24 September in the framework of the Congress for the Progress of Science. 1900: The two bronze statues were made by Forges de Bussy (Capitain-Gény) and installed.
The monument was erected 25 years after the death of the founder of neurology , and it symbolises the tribute paid by the people of Boulogne and local medical societies to a great figure in medicine.
