The Couleuvriniers tower is located near the Cassel gate and owes its name to the introduction of the couleuvrine, a thin artillery piece as long as a snake.
The couleuvrine, originally a hand cannon and precursor of the harquebus and the musket , is a small long-barreled artillery piece from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance that fired cannonballs (made of stone or metal). The projectiles were fired at a high muzzle velocity, giving them a long trajectory and considerable range .
The first recorded use of a couleuvrine, a semi-portable hand cannon, dates to 1428 , during the Siege of Orleans by English forces.
