The "Nekerstor" is a bastion of two half-moons that was built by the Spanish in 1558 under the reign of Philip II of Spain.
The Nekerstortoren is both a water entrance and a flanking tower and it is the most important tower of the city's medieval fortifications.
It is the origin of the legend of "Nekker", an evil spirit that is said to live in the water and that howls at night to scare away travelers who hang around nearby. It is said to be the lair of the monster that scares unwary children on the banks of the canals. The monster of Necker is a mythological beast from Flanders. Those who have seen it have never returned.
