Piltdown was the location where they found "the Piltdown Man", an early human. Its a famous case of a paleontological hoax. The hoax find consisted of fragments of a skull and jawbone collected in 1912 from a gravel pit nearby the village.
Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes, may have been the perpetrator of the Piltdown Man. This theory is presented by the Richard Milner, an American historian of science. He indicates that Canon Doyle's book The Lost World contains several encrypted clues regarding his involvement in the hoax.
