On top of the conglomerate blocks you will find beautiful crystals of calcite . In this case, they are opaque white. But did you know that there are also completely transparent versions of this crystal, known as Iceland spar or Icelandic crystal. There are theories that the Vikings navigated the seas using crystals of this mineral, which allowed them to accurately determine the position of the sun even in cloudy weather . The position of the sun could be determined to a few degrees with the help of the sunstone and the naked eye in cloudy and twilight conditions. The discovery of such a stone on the ship Alderney, which sank in 1592, suggests that this navigation technique was still used after the invention of the magnetic compass.
