Paleo Eliades

Near here, on the edge of the sea villa, the Profitis Ilias church was built in the 6-7th century near the well that supplied Methoni with drinking water. Remnants of that water pipe can still be seen near the castle and the beach of Methoni.

After 12 centuries of sea pounding on the cliffs, it was decided in 1879-1890 that the church could no longer be saved and a new Profitis Illias was built more to the east.

That historical information gives us a bit of an idea at what rate these flysch cliffs are being eroded away. That is at least one meter per century (at this place).
