Slieve Sneaghta Mountain Challenge

Access: Small parking area available in Dunlewey close to the old church remains (OSI map 6, grid ref: B929 189)

Difficulty level: Difficult - Good level of fitness required, no defined path, wet boggy land to be expected with steep ground in some areas. Appropriate footwear/hiking equipment should be worn and food and water in supply.

Notable features: Depending on the time of year, ground underfoot can be very wet in places. There is a short path at the beginning of this route, but it doesn’t last very long so it is important to pre-plan your climb. This route offers spectacular views of the poison glen area and allows for a visit to the old church close to the beginning of the hike. At the summit of Slieve Sneaghta you will have an unhindered view of the Derryveigh mountain range and surrounding areas.

There are a few steep ridges leading off the summit so care should be taken if weather is bad or visibility poor. When descending, some hikers prefer to follow the Devlin river back to Dunlewey, this route takes you past the Nabrackmea lake and offers some great photo opportunities.
