After Filippo Brunelleschi lost the contest to design the doors of the Baptisterium, he left for a study trip. Everywhere he went to measure and study buildings and constructions. He visited, among other things, the Pantheon in Rome and was fascinated by the dome. That was the largest dome of the ancient world. There he got the inspiration to place a dome on the church of Santa Maria del Fiore in Firenze, for it had been uncovered for centuries.
