The town of Abbadia San Salvatore is named after the abbey with the same name. This abbey was on the Via Francigena pilgrimage. It was in this abbey that the "Via Francigena" is first mentioned in the Actum Clusio, a parchment of 876.

The area was once important for the extraction of cinnabar, an ore for mercury.
