Description

On 9 May 2011, during the third stage of the Giro d'Italia, Wouter Weylandt died in a fall while descending the Passo del Bocco. Weylandt caught his pedal behind a wall, after which he fell and slid twenty meters over the asphalt. After many attempts at CPR, it was confirmed by the Giro doctor that he had died. It later turned out that Weylandt died immediately as a result of a skull fracture. His girlfriend An Sophie was five months pregnant with their first child at the time. She gave birth to a daughter on September 1.
