A "baglio" is a traditional Sicilian country house that often served as a fortified farmhouse or estate.
The Baglio di Scopello is a beautiful complex consisting of an old farmhouse surrounded by farmland and vineyards. It is located on a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and offers breathtaking views of the coastline and the nearby Zingaro Nature Reserve.
The baglio is a quadrangular complex with an arched entrance, dry stone walls, a drinking trough and an ancient oak tree that dominates the courtyard. The courtyard once housed goods, livestock and carriages and today is full of shops and refreshment facilities. From here you can still clearly see the traces of the passage of carts in the narrow, stone-paved streets.
The farmhouse itself dates back to the 18th century and retains its original architectural features, such as thick stone walls, courtyards and a central courtyard. Today it serves as a hotel, restaurant and event venue, where visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere, traditional Sicilian cuisine and beautiful surroundings.
Scopello itself is a charming village with cobbled streets, whitewashed houses and a picturesque harbour. It is a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to beautiful beaches, such as the well-known beach of Cala Rossa.
Scopello, takes its name from the Latin 'Scopulus' meaning rock. Scopello also lies on an ancient prehistoric Roman settlement , Cetaria, which appears on many ancient maps along with ancient Trapani and Erice.
