The so-called "Gymnasium" is not really a gymnasium, but a large house of a wealthy family with an atrium (a central space in the house, with or without an open roof) and peristilium (courtyard with colonnade).
Six columns of the peristilium were erected in the 19th century. Although the site is large, these are the only columns that are upright.
Solunto was founded in the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians and prospered as a prosperous city in the Hellenistic period
