This striking structure called the "Tholos" is not a temple but rather a unique funerary structure known as a tholos tomb. This tholos is located southwest of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in the Valley. It dates from the 4th or 3rd century BC.
It was probably the grave of a wealthy or prominent person of that time.
The name "Tholos" refers to the rounded shape of the structure's roof. The roof is semicircular and resembles a dome.
Tholoi such as the Temple of Apollo at Delphi are found throughout the classical world. While some had central altars and played a sacred role, others were built for different purposes.
