This church was built in 1630 thanks to legacies and funds donated by members of the Brotherhood of Santa Maria degli Agonizzanti, whose aim was to rescue the souls of those condemned to the gallows from the underworld through prayer and fasting.
The church underwent several renovations over the centuries, the most important of which was carried out in 1784 by architect Antonio Interguglielmi, during which the structure was enlarged.
The facade, in classic 18th century style, has a large semi-circular tympanum.
Inside, the frescoes in the apse are the most interesting. They show moments from the life of the Blessed Virgin by Elia Interguglielmi, Antonio's brother, who also painted the canvases on the side altars. The decorations on the main altar are the work of Ignazio Marabitti. The four Doctors of the Church that decorate the nave were made by Gaspare Firriolo.
