Chiesa di San Nicolò - Palermo

Source: Willem Vandenameele

Description

This very old church has existed since the 13th century.

The current conformation is due both to the eighteenth-century renovation in which the structure with columns and pointed arches remained hidden, and to the subsequent nineteenth-century adjustments. The plan is basilica-like with three naves separated by pillars and is completely plastered.

At the intersection between the nave and the transept is the flattened dome , which is painted on the inside with fake coffins. The altar to the left of the transept is dedicated to S. Nicolò, the altar to the right preserves an eighteenth-century crucifix; in the left nave there is a wooden statue of the Madonna with a large plastic effect.

The floor was renewed around the middle of the 19th century. In addition to the church, it is possible to visit the tower, a slender construction in square bluestone, originally separate from the church, which became a real city tower in the 14th century and was then supplemented with stained glass windows, decorated with drawings and two-color inlay. In the 16th century the tower was also equipped with a mechanical clock, which no longer exists.
