Chiesa di Sant'Eulalia dei Catalani - Palermo

Description

The church was built in the 15th century for the community of Catalan merchants who settled in Palermo around the 13th century.

In addition to the church, the complex consists of a series of buildings that have undergone various transformations over the centuries. The complex is owned by the Spanish state and houses the Spanish Cultural Center. Only the main facade , built at the end of the 16th century in the Plateresque style imported from Spain, faces the street.

An uncovered passage leads to the church , which was built in its current form in 1630 and left incomplete. The building has a Greek cross plan on a square base; four pillars were to support the dome which was never built.

A continuous entablature runs beneath the vaults and unifies the space, divided laterally by central arches; 17th century frescoes can be seen in the pendentives, while the wall is plastered with stone architectural details.

Marble columns from Barcelona were used for the interior structures.

The church had some good 17th century furniture and paintings, now in the Diocesan Museum.
