The current structure was built in the 14th century and dates back to 1726. Since 1853, the church has been the city's Pantheon , where illustrious Sicilian artists, men of letters and politicians are buried.
The facade is divided into three by pairs of columns and is enlivened by niches and statues; on the sides are two bell towers that are connected to the curved pediment by two airy balustrades.
The solemn interior is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves and deep chapels, some of which are entirely decorated with polychrome marble . Remarkable works of art have been preserved, including: the Madonna del Rosario by Vincenzo da Pavia, San Domenico by Zoppo di Gangi, statues by Antonello Gagini and Valerio Villareale, etc.
