SHORT DESCRIPTION

The majority of the walk runs through the 'Parco fluviale Gesso e Stura' that surrounds Cuneo. The walk starts at 'Piazza Galimberti' and soon after the start the route descends to the mainly long nature park with the theme of the two rivers that flow together northeast of Cuneo. The first part goes downstream along the right bank of the 'Stura', to the 'Confluenza' where the 'Stura' and the 'Gesso' meet. The second part follows the 'Gesso' a few kilometers upstream along the left bank. The end of the walk is again at 'Piazza Galimberti' in the heart of Cuneo.

There are four points that deserve extra attention:

► immediately after the underpass under the driveway to the 'Ponte Vecchio' at the start of the walk (km 2.3), a very narrow informal path is included along and between the allotments. The entrance is immediately after the tunnel under the driveway and easy to miss. In 'wet' weather the path may be unusable. An alternative is to walk straight ahead and turn left before the cemetery. You will then automatically return to the route at the end of the allotments (left) and the cemetery (right);

► the path after the underpass under the old railway line (km 3.5) (left along the sewage treatment plant) is also narrow and, depending on the season, partly overgrown. It also runs close to the water for a short distance, without fencing (situation in spring 2024), further on there is even talk of a 'natural tunnel' in summer and autumn. However, the path is always passable. An alternative is to go straight ahead immediately after the underpass under the railway and walk past the sewage treatment plant on the right. At the end of this path (just past the sewage treatment plant) you will return to the described route;

► at km 4.3 we take a look at a dam in the Gesso. Here, part of the water from the Stura (in dry periods almost all the water from the Stura), the cleaned water from the sewage treatment plant and the water from the Gesso is fed to a canal. In very dry periods, all the water passes through that canal. During those periods you can cross the dam to the part of the park on the northeast side of Cuneo. Be careful when exploring there: 'over the dam' is not an official path and part of it is very narrow. During periods when the water is (very) high or has been very high, large parts of the dam may have disappeared completely. The dam is repaired almost every year;

► returning to the city, just past the branch of the CAI (the Italian Alpine Association) (on the left side of the route opposite a parking lot), at km 6.65 there is a steep staircase on the right. At the end you have to cross a busy road (!! there is a zebra, but still be careful!!) and the path continues via a second staircase to the city center. The steep stairs can be avoided: a little further on there is a less steep entrance to the city and a little further on there is even an 'oblique elevator' that will help you even more easily on your way to the end of the walk at Piazza Galimberti.

Buen Camino!

Have a pleasant walk and enjoy the park.
