The "capital" city of the Puuc region flourished during three centuries, its economy based on the fertile soil at the foot of hills that enriched the valleys with nutrients. Water was a problem, though, so many artificial water reservoirs have been found and the buildings and temples are obsessively but sublimely decorated with masks of the rain god Chaac. The main pyramid at the entrance has no equal because of its rounded oval shape and its clearly distinguishable building phases. The Nunnery square is a milestone in Maya art, stuffed with symbology in the four facades. The Governor's Palace, a huge building 100 meters long, has more than 20.000 pieces of mosaic stone in its facades. Its decline was probably caused by the rivalry of rising Chichén Itza.
