Neuroscientist Ineke van der Ham from Leiden University published a study that showed the following: "Men and women can read maps equally welll". Men and the elderly think that they are better at reading maps than they actually are. While women underestimate themselves. That starts from puberty. Boys also start to overestimate their own abilities. Probably because stereotypes from that age influence the self-image.
