The 'Maria Hemelvaartskerk' is a neo-Gothic church in Sas van Gent that was inaugurated in 1892 and was designed by Joseph Cuypers. The church is located on the Markt and is a cruciform basilica with tower and celebration tower. It is the first church in the Netherlands to use a vault of "cement-iron", or reinforced concrete. This led to contemptuous criticism such as "fake" and "kitsch", but today the church can be understood not only as architectural and religious heritage, but also as an important industrial heritage. The church is therefore classified as a national monument.
