Until 1850, peat was only extracted on a small scale in the Netherlands. Since then, the peat bogs have been reworked on a large scale, especially in Brabant and Drenthe. The reason for this was that around 1850 the demand for fuel increased enormously due to industrialization and population growth. Firewood was almost gone, because there were almost no forests left.
Many former peat landscapes were subsequently made suitable for agriculture. Fortunately, a few places escaped this because they were too wet, such as the De Groote Peel National Park (14 km2 in size) on the edge of Brabant and Limburg. Two other peat bogs that still remain from the former peat bog in this region are the Deurnsche Peel and the Mariapeel.
