The square belongs to the oldest parts of the city and is located on the spot where there used to be a ford in the river Grote Aa. In the fourteenth century, the Aa was filled in and built around the place, creating its current shape. In 1929, a roundabout was built on the Grote Markt to manage the increasing traffic. This roundabout has since disappeared and the square is no longer accessible to car traffic, apart from taxis and supplies to the shops in the city center. The square was restored in 2006.
