Herengracht 458 was part of the scene of a major art forgery of Vermeer. The house belonged to the Jewish dealer Goudstikken. The investigator Joop Piller, who was after the forgerer Han Van Meegeren, took over this house after the war. He brought Han Van Meegeren to this house, where Van Meegeren confessed and explained how he forged the paintings of Vermeer.
It was here that Van Meegeren demonstrated his skills and painted another Vermeer to prove he was the forgerer.
