The mill of Berntsen in Loerbeek was originally the mill of Ten Benzel. It was built in 1844 by Johannes Wilhelmus Ten Benzel, after he had received approval from the Ministers of Finance and the Interior and the Provincial Executive of Gelderland in April of that year. This approval was preceded by an objection procedure, in which the steward of Huis Bergh had objected to the construction. He was of the opinion that there were already enough windmills in Bergh and surrounding municipalities. The costs of the construction and maintenance of the new mill would not outweigh the benefit that the inhabitants of Beek and the surrounding area would derive from it. Huis Bergh would suffer damage because the count's mills would have less to grind. In addition, the control of the milling by the State would be unnecessarily difficult, especially since the new miller would try to lure customers away from the county mills by offering certain advantages. These objections did not stop the construction of the mill.
