The terraced landscape north of Wahlwiller is world-famous for its grafts. Centuries ago, when the farmers wanted to cultivate the steep slopes here, they built terraces. To prevent the end of the field from being washed away, a few furrows were dug perpendicular to the slope. The land was left fallow, causing bushes to sprout and create a natural dike. Digging in Limburgish is graoven and graoft became graft. In any case, it is beautiful; this Dutch rice landscape.
