It is engraved in all our collective memory that here in Hotel De Wereld, in the presence of Prince Bernhard, the surrender of the Germans took place on 5 May 1945. Although the conditions of capitulation were read to the German general Blaskowitz, he refused to sign. He and Canadian General Foulkes eventually agreed on the capitulation, but the signing was delayed for 24 hours. In the end, this took place a day later in the auditorium of the Agricultural College, without a photographer and without Prince Bernhard.
On the 5 May Square in front of the hotel, Prince Bernhard took the famous parade of veterans for years. See also the plaque embedded in the wall of the building (right).
