Of the more than 1,200 windmills in the Netherlands, you will find nineteen in Kinderdijk. These mills were used by the Water Boards to maintain the water level in the polders. The mills of the Overwaard and the stone mills of the Nederwaard grind the water from the polders of the Alblasserwaard up a last flight of stairs to the high bosoms. These ground sailors skim with their sails of up to fifteen meters just over the grand.
