In 2011, the Limburg butterfly expert Herman Peeters counted 38 of the total of about 50 species of butterflies that are observed annually in the Netherlands. The Sint-Pietersberg was once again the best place to watch butterflies in our country. The relatively warm microclimate and the flowery south-east calcareous grasslands ensure an unprecedented diversity of species. "The Sint-Pietersberg is the northernmost spur of the Belgian Ardennes. Temperature-sensitive species migrate into our country from the Ardennes via the green ribbon of the Meuse valley, the Jeker valley and the Albert Canal. From the mountain, they spread to the rest of Limburg and the central and northern Netherlands.
