The place where Vreedenhorst stands was already built in the 13th century. This was then a higher, dry place in the peat bog. The current house dates from ca. 1650, but the cellars are much older. That it is an early country estate can be seen from the upstairs room on the right side of the façade, which normally occurs in farms. An upstairs room was the posh room of a farmhouse, which was higher than the other rooms. Since the floor was higher, there was enough space to make a basement under the room. This could be used for the storage of cheese, for example. The fact that this country estate has such an agricultural reference means that it is very old. Later country estates from the 18th century were larger, symmetrical and radiated much more status.
