There was a large open area on the Quay, where beets were loaded into freight wagons in the autumn. Izaak de Bruijne testifies: "The beets came from the land in wagons. They went full on the weighbridge, either at Blondeel or at Cuelenaere. After unloading, they were weighed empty." Gerard de Bruijne: "There were large piles of beets in total fifty to sixty meters long and six meters high. They put the wagons in front of it and put a gangway to it, after which the beets went into baskets that were taken on the shoulder and emptied into the wagons."
"When you went from Cuelenaere to Blondeel during the beet campaign, you really had to have boots on. It was all swallow. And if it had rained with that heavy clay on the street, it would have been a mess."
