From about 800 the area came under Frankish rule and Christianity was introduced. Wooden churches are being built on ancient holy sites and the dead are to be buried at the church. Special 'deer roads' are created.
Deer roads or dead roads are roads, often no more than a path, between places without a cemetery and the nearest cemetery. Reewegen were used to take the dead to the final resting place. As far as Zweeloo was concerned, there were deer roads from Noord-Sleen, Oosterhesselen, Wezup, Meppen and Benneveld (places without their own cemetery) to the cemetery in Zweeloo.
In 1252 a stone church was built in Zweeloo on the foundations of the former wooden church. This church still stands today and is considered an important religious and cultural-historical monument. The building shows the characteristics of the transitional period between the Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.
