Around 1580, the whole of Flanders was on the side of the Revolt against the Spanish king. The commander-in-chief of the Spanish army, Alexander Farnese (the Duke of Parma), was ordered to reclaim the lost territories.
To hinder his advance, the rebels crossed the dikes in various places between 1583 and 1586, after which large parts of North Flanders were flooded.
In 1583 all the land east of the Land of Cadzand and north of Oostburg was flooded (inundation). To the east of present-day Breskens, an arm of the sea was created, the Nieuwershavensche Gat, which became connected to the Zwarte Gat: the stream channel between Zwin and the North Sea, which flowed along the east side of the Land van Cadzand.
