In the 13th and early 14th centuries, Aardenburg was a prosperous trading and port city and a member of the Flemish Hanseatic League. After that, the city fell into rapid and deep decline, mainly as a result of many floods caused by subsidence (caused by large-scale peat extraction) and poor dike maintenance.
