The Waterpoort in the Dutch city of Tiel was built in 1647. At the time, Tiel was a fortified city with city walls, moats and four gates: the Kleibergse Pooort, the Westluidense Poort, the Burense Poort and the Zandwijckse Poort. A year earlier, the inner harbour had already been filled in, creating the Square on which the Waterpoort is located. The Waterpoort never served as a gateway to the port, but was the outer gate of the former Kleibergse Poort in the city wall. Until 1782 there was a moat with a bridge in front of the gate.
