After the reclamation of the early Middle Ages, the marshy land had become suitable for habitation and arable farming. Because the soil settled, the ground level subsided and came into contact with the groundwater again. The soil became too wet for arable farming and many farmers switched to cattle breeding. Due to the increasing demand for fuel from the rapidly growing cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht, large parts of the country were excavated from the 17th century onwards for peat extraction. Over the centuries, the landscape has been used differently by the people who lived and worked there. Streekmuseum Vredegoed gives a good idea of this. While walking past the furnished spaces such as a living room, cheese dairy, blacksmith's shop, grocery store or kitchen, you will gain insight into traditional living and traditional work on the farm and in the peat farm in this area.
