The Valdijk is special for two reasons. It is the oldest dike in the region and also one of the three growing places of woolly thistle in the Netherlands. Woolly thistle is a biennial species; The first year a rosette is formed, the following year purplish tubular flowers form with a woolly wrap of hairs.
On the other side of the Valdijk is the hedgerow landscape De Poel. The flowery grasslands are separated by hedges of blackthorn, steep hawthorn and blackberry. They arose spontaneously centuries ago. There used to be many more of these beautiful areas here, but due to the land consolidation in the 60s of the last century, a lot has been lost. Fortunately, De Poel has been preserved.
