MUSEUM:
The new museum building of Kaap Skil is an experience that makes a museum visit more than special.
In 2012 the new museum building of Kaap Skil was opened. It is a design by Mecanoo architects from Delft. The building has four interconnected, playful gabled roofs that blend into the rhythm of village roofs that seem to rise above the dike from the sea like waves. The wooden façade of Cape Skil illustrates the centuries-old tradition of reuse. The vertical slats are made of sawn hardwood sheet piling from the Noord-Hollands Kanaal and thus get a second life, just like the washed-up collection pieces of the museum.
BEACHCOMBER STORIES:
Tales for school classes
Number of persons: max. 70
Days: during opening hours
Costs: entrance
They are still there: beachcombers who go to the beach in a westerly wind with the hope that somewhere on the beach that one, special, with nothing to compare, beautiful object washes ashore that everyone is jealous of. The darker the clouds, the harder the rain, the more it drifts, the better it gets for the beachcomber. No one to see, no beach catch nearby. The beach belongs to the beachcomber. In solitude, the beachcomber finds his jutjes and stories along the wild coast.
The beachcombers and their stories can be seen, heard and experienced in the beachcombing of Cape Skil. Every day, the beachcombers tell their own and other strong stories from texel's rich beachcombing past. Stories with humor and slapstick, but also with a critical look at consumption and pollution. A plea for freedom and adventure close to home.
ACTIVITIES
Fish smoking:
On Friday morning, the entire Texel fishing fleet will walk back into the port. The fish is unloaded at the auction and the ship is cleaned and cleaned up in the home port. Rope and chains are untangled and the nets are repaired. Then go home to make the smoking vessel and smoke the fish. In Kaap Skil you can also enjoy the smell and taste of delicious smoked fish. Our fish smoker will smoke nice gurnard for you.
Rope striking:
Rope beating is a profession that is almost non-existent. Maybe you don't know what it is at all. Rope striking is the making of a rope by twisting yarns or threads together. The rope butchers, as these craftsmen were called, fastened the yarns to hooks and with the turning wheel the yarns were twisted together. The wires made strokes around each other. That's why they're called rope butchers. The rope beating happened outside on the line track. Sometimes ropes of a few hundred meters were struck and for that you needed a lot of space. If you want to see how the tug of war works, come to the museum and it will all be explained to you and maybe you can help yourself.
Forge:
In the past, in villages and towns, you could hear the hammering on the anvil by the blacksmith. A huge noise that you wouldn't want to hear anymore. Except maybe in a museum. Well you can. In Cape Skil, the blacksmith is at work in his forge. There you will see that forging is a beautiful craft where you can make the most beautiful things from rock-hard steel. And the fact that this is accompanied by a lot of noise only makes it more beautiful.
Sailor stories:
Sailors have the most beautiful stories. They travel all over the world and come to places that you will never see as a normal mortal. And they experience things there that you would never experience as a holidaymaker. Therefore, a reason to come to Cape Skil and listen to the strong sailor stories that are all equally true.
Tales from the village of Skil:
Oudeschild is a close-knit fishing community where families have lived with pleasure for generations. That something has changed in all these years is told in the fishermen's houses. Do you want to know what life used to be like? How they lived, what the children played with, what clothes they wore or what they ate? Then you have to come to the museum and you can ask anything.
Shopping like 50 years ago:
In the museum is a shop as you saw them a lot in the village fifty years ago. Small but overflowing with merchandise. The saleswomen are present three afternoons a week and they can tell you exactly what is in the store, who the store belonged to, how the bakery behind the store works and why they wear those beautiful clothes.
NET FINES:
All fishermen, young and old, can fine and knit nets. Knitting nets is the new creation of a fishing net. Netting is repairing a torn net. In the past, repairing nets was done at home in the scarce free hours. In Kaap Skil you can watch the nets being repaired and if you want to try it yourself, this is your chance.
BUILDING SHIP MODELS:
In the museum there is a beautiful model of the Reede van Texel with hundreds of ship models on it. If you want to see how much work it is to make a ship model as true to life as possible from wood, you should come and have a look at the model builder on Wednesday afternoon. On the basis of drawings, the model is meticulously and with angelic patience plank by plank, the model is built, painted, processed and provided with ropes.
WORKSHOP BEACHCOMBING PIECE MAKING:
On the beach of Texel, rubbish washes up every day that you can no longer use for anything. A bottle cap, a piece of rope, a broken shelf, an old work glove, all objects that seem useless. But in the beachcombing workshop we turn all this junk into beautiful creations. Under the guidance of artist Paulien Valk, you will be challenged to conjure up your own princess or witch with the finds from the beach. You will be amazed at your own abilities and what you can make of old junk.
