In this area near Baarle Hertog and Baarle Nassau there are thirty enclaves, pieces of territory bordered by another country. Two dukes did 'land grabbing' a long time ago and so the map became somewhat fragmented. In 1830, when Belgium was separated, the border was determined, but the Netherlands and Flanders could not agree on how to arrange things in this area. After the First World War, the Belgians tried in vain to draw a straight line on the map. Nature has benefited from the unsolvable border issues. While elsewhere all streams and rivers were straightened, the Merkske remained as it was: curling and winding through a gently sloping landscape of meadows and bushes.
