Zjwingelput Herkenter
The scutching pit of Herkenrade is located on the square at the intersection of the Langsteeg with the hamlet of Herkenrade. The newly built well house does not stand on the site of the original well of Herkenrade. The original well was located about ten meters away. The well dated from well before 1850 and was filled in in 1946. This well must have been about 60 meters deep. After an absence from the street scene for more than 50 years, the well house was restored to its full glory in 1996 by the residents of Herkenrade, on the basis of old photos at its current location. On the newly masonry parapet is a wooden roof, covered with roof tiles. The well wheel and the well pulley are present. In the well of the Herkenter even the well bucket is not missing! On the left side of the well house is a bluestone 'krub' (manger; water spout) where the water was collected in buckets.
The old photo gives a wonderful glimpse back in time. The photo was taken around 1930.
