We are now in the Bethunepolder, the only one of the lakes in this area that has been drained. However, this area has never really been suitable for the use of agriculture, as it is very difficult to regulate the groundwater level properly. This is due to the flow of groundwater in this area. The rain that falls on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug flows through the ground and resurfaces at this location, so that naturally very wet conditions prevail in the area. Since an attempt was made to make the soil usable, the water level in the area was lowered. The result of this is that the peat decays and subsidence takes place. Partly because of this, the soil in this area has fallen 2-3 meters in recent years. This can be clearly seen in the bunker from the Second World War, which is now located this distance above the surface. Because the piles are grounded in the ice age cover sand, which does not clink, the bunker has not sunk with the surface and is now 2-3 meters higher.
