The Utrechtse Heuvelrug has about 400 burial mounds, often hidden from view by vegetation. The replica of the burial mound gives a picture of these prehistoric traces in the landscape. The cross-section shows that burial mounds can consist of several layers. Because they were often used as a cemetery again until the Iron Age, the hills became higher or wider over time. In some hills, grave goods have been found, such as pottery. In prehistoric times, a wreath of poles or a ditch was built around the burial mounds, presumably to keep the world of the dead separate from the world of the living.
