Between 1300 and 1400 the Ammersche Boezem was dug. A bosom is a temporary storage place for excess polder water. The Ammersche Boezem flowed into the Lek via a lock and still plays an important role in controlling the water level in the Alblasserwaard, although the lock has been decommissioned.
On the Molenkade along this bosom are four polder mills, three of which date from 1596 or earlier: the Gelkenes Molen, the Graaflandse Molen and the Achterlandse Molen. Seesaw mills are characterized by the fact that the entire upper house with tail is rotatable around a tube, which is held in vertical position by the pyramid-shaped construction of the lower tower.
