'Alder measuring' are plots with low alder walls. The alder wood was chopped/sawn every 6 to 7 years just above the ground (at knee height). This is how a stump or stump was created, comparable to a pollard willow. Due to the decrease in demand for alder wood as a fuel, there are only a few original alder measurements left today.
Alder meters are bordered by 'schurvelingen': vegetated walls that were once constructed as a plot separation. The overgrown embankments formed natural buffers around the alder meters and offered protection against new drifts of dune sand.
