The Helenaveen Company had a private canal dug (the Helenavaart) to transport the peat extracted in the Peel. Attached to this canal were trident districts (gaff districts), three parallel side canals that met at the end and thus merged into the canal. For the later (agricultural) habitation, it was advantageous that a smaller number of bridges had to be built over each district sufficed.
