The gradual tectonic uplift of South Limburg and the incision of the Meuse have created mesh terraces. On the terrace crossings, hollow roads can be created due to wear and tear. Centuries of using the same path, on foot or by horse and cart, led to a natural erosion process. Loose earth washed off with the rainwater and in this way the road deepened year after year. It is a process that still occurs today as long as the road surface remains unpaved.
Hollow roads are typical landscape elements for hilly regions with a loamy subsoil. The fine loam granules stick well together and allow the formation of solid, steep walls. In addition to a suitable soil, sufficient relief is needed so that the run-off rainwater gets enough strength to carry soil.
