Lancierskazerne

Description

After the Ten Days Campaign of 1831, intended to suppress the rebellion of the Belgians, William II retreated to Tilburg and his troops were billeted with the population. To remove the nuisance, three stables were built in 1841, which could accommodate two hundred horses. In 1842 a barracks was built next door for two hundred men.
Here the 2nd and 3rd squadrons of the 4th regiment Ligte dragoons were housed and thus Tilburg became a garrison town. In 1843 the dragoons were replaced by lancers and a riding school was built. On April 30, 1856, the soldiers left again and the barracks came into the possession of the municipality of Tilburg.
The municipality sold the complex in two parts, namely to P.J. van den Bergh, who established a full-flown and woollen fabric factory in it, and N.N. de Kanter, who ran a tannery in it. As a result of all this, a number of things changed. In 1904 Van den Bergh built a boiler house with a tall chimney in the courtyard. After De Kanter sold his share to Van den Bergh in 1896, he built an additional weaving mill. This is how the company BeKa (Van den Bergh-Krabbendam) came into being. In 1968 this company closed its doors, after which the Lanciers barracks came back into the possession of the municipality in 1976. Some of the factory buildings were demolished and the remaining buildings, including the horse stables and the chimney, were classified as national monuments.

On September 16, 1988, the Tilburg Municipal Archives moved into part of the complex. Today, it houses the Tilburg Regional Archives.
