Description

St. Gertrude's Church, St. Gertrude

Three-aisled church with Romanesque, Gothic and Classicist features, which punctuate its architectural history. On the west side is the unarticulated tower with constricted spire, on the east side a three-sided closed choir.

Building history
Some wall remains of the 11th-century basic church have been preserved. The marlstone tower was built around 1300 and a century later the nave and the Gothic choir were built. The current aisles were added in the 15th century. In the 16th century, the crooked burial chapel of the lords of Libeek was built on the southeast side. In 1619 the baptistery followed on the south side of the tower. In 1700 the aisles were raised to such an extent that a hall church was created. It was also at this time that the current roof was built. Major renovations took place in 1836 and 1988, as evidenced by the inscription on the lintel above the entrance door. In 1836, for example, the entrance to the west tower was realized. In 1956-'57 a major restoration also took place under the direction of J. Huysmans. The interior was deplastered and covered by a flat beamed ceiling.

Exterior
The church, built entirely of marl, has a gable roof over the three naves, which is covered with slates.

Interior
In the arches you can see rubble stone work from the 11th-century church. The burial chapel is covered by a stucco ceiling with an alliance coat of arms from 1717. The inventory includes a Gothic Anna-te-Drieën from the 15th century, a John the Evangelist from the end of the 15th century, a triptych with images from the life of John the Baptist from the end of the 16th century and a late Mannerist side altar from 1644. Two panels of a rococo communion rail also remain.

The stained glass windows in the church were made by Jean den Rooijen, a studio for glass painting in Roermond and, according to the church's cash book, date from 1912.
